Xbox is one of the default applications for Windows 10. This application integrates Xbox with Windows and includes a handy game bar that allows you to take snapshots and record videos.

To open the game bar, you normally have to press the Win + G key while a window is selected. If that keyboard shortcut doesn’t open the Game Bar, here are some possible solutions to the error.

What can I do if the Xbox game bar is not working?

1. Check the Game bar’s Settings

  1. Open the Xbox app by clicking the Start menu tile. Or you can enter Xbox in Cortana’s search box instead.

2. Then sign in to the Xbox app. Note that a Microsoft account is required to sign in to the                 Xbox app.
3. In the lower-left corner of the Xbox app is a gear icon for the Settings button in the sidebar.         Click the Settings button and select Game DVR.

4. Now you can select Record Game Clips and Screenshots with Game DVR option.              If that option is disabled, click it to re-enable it.
5. Close the Xbox app and restart Windows.
6. Press the Win + G key again to open the Game Bar.

The Game bar setting Record game clips and screenshots may be disabled in Windows 10.

So the game bar will not open when you press your hotkey. Then you can check that option as described above.

2. Edit the Registry

  1. First, open the registry by pressing the Win + R key and entering regedit in Run.
  2. Then find
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrent VersionGameDVR
  3. Then right click on the AppCaptureEnabled DWORD and select Modify.
  4. If the DWORD value is 0, enter 1 in the Value data text box.
  5. Now navigate to GameConfigStore.

7. Enter 1 in the Value data text box if the current value is 0.
8. Restart Windows and press the keyboard shortcut on the game bar.
You can also change the game bar through registration.

3. Don’t Run the Games in Full-Screen Mode

Does the game bar not open when playing a full screen game? The game bar does not open in full screen because most games do not recognize the Win key + G hotkey.

That doesn’t mean you can’t use the Game Bar options in full screen mode, but the overlay UI won’t open.

You can still record a game with the keyboard shortcut Win + Alt + R or take a snapshot by pressing Win + Alt + Prt. Run the game in windowed mode, then press the Win + G key to open the Game Bar UI.

4. Check the Xbox app’s Hotkey Settings

  1. First, open the Xbox app again.
  2. Click the Settings button at the bottom left of the application window and select Game DVR.
  3. If the Record game clips and screenshots with Game DVR option is enabled, you can highlight the Game bar shortcuts under Keyboard shortcuts. Is the Game Bar Hotkey Win+G or Something Else?
  4. If someone changed the keyboard shortcut in the Game Bar, you can remove the custom key from the Your Shortcut text box.
  5. You can also press the custom hotkey or enter your own alternate hotkey to open the game bar. However, keep in mind that some games may block custom keyboard shortcuts.
  6. Click Save to save the new settings.

Verify that the keyboard shortcuts on the Game Bar have not been reconfigured in any way. The Xbox app allows users to customize the hotkeys so that someone has tampered with the hotkey settings.

You can check the keyboard shortcuts on the Game Bar as described above.

5. Install the Windows Media Feature Pack

  1. Access this page of the Windows Media Feature Pack.
  2. Scroll down and click Download Media Feature Pack Update Package Now to save the installer.
  3. Open the folder where you saved the Windows Media Feature Pack and run the installer to add it to Windows.

There are versions of Windows 10 N and KN that do not include all application and media technologies in more standard editions.

So if your platform is a Windows 10 N edition, that may be the reason why the game bar won’t open for you.

There are some applications that require Windows Media files that are not included in Windows 10 KN or N.

However, you can install media-related technologies that are otherwise missing from Windows 10 N with the Windows Media Feature Pack.

6. Reinstall the Xbox app

  1. Press Windows key + S and enter PowerShell. Right-click Windows PowerShell in the list of results and choose Run as administrator.Xbox Game Bar Not Opening/Not Working On Windows 10

The Game Bar is a feature closely related to the Xbox app, and if you’re having issues with the Game Bar, reinstalling the Xbox app may resolve them.

Reinstalling a main Windows application is a somewhat advanced process involving PowerShell, but you should be able to reinstall the Xbox application without any problems by following the procedure above.

After you run this command, the Xbox app will be removed from your PC. Now all you need to do is open the Microsoft Store app and download the Xbox app again.

After you download it, the game bar issue should be completely resolved.

7. Turn Game bar off and on

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. When the Settings app opens, navigate to the Games section

If the problem does not occur in the new account, you should move all your personal files to the new account and use it instead of your old account.

9. Use third-party solutions

If you can’t fix the Game Bar issue, consider using a third-party software.

Although the Game Bar comes preinstalled with Windows 10, it has certain limitations, and if you can’t get it to work properly, you may want to try other Windows 10 screen recording software.

If you are looking for another application that can record your screen and your gaming sessions, we recommend that you give Icecream Screen Recorder a try.
