It’s been over a month since the 2004 release of Windows 10. Not everyone who wants the OS will get it right away, though. Therefore, some users are now getting error 0xC1900101 – 0x20017 when they try to install it.
So far, there are two main categories of problems that prevent users from updating to the latest version of Windows 10. On the one hand, there are errors that you can fix yourself, such as driver incompatibility.
On the other hand, Microsoft put some machines on hold for compatibility, which prevented them from being updated.
But now it seems that even the method you use to upgrade to Windows 10 v2004 can also affect the chances of a successful installation.
Windows 10 2004 0xC1900101 – 0x20017 error
A user on the Windows 10 subreddit reported receiving the error code 0xC1900101 – 0x20017 after trying to install the Windows 10 May 2020 Update using the Media Creation Tool.
Instead of installing, Windows throws the following error message:
“We couldn’t install Windows 10. We’ve set back your PC to the way it was right before you started installing Windows 10. 0xC1900101 – 0x20017 error code. The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation”.
In addition to the installation error, the operating system reverts all changes and restores the PC to the pre-installation state.
The error code 0xC1900101 – 0x20017 indicates an incomplete installation of Windows 10. This usually occurs due to issues such as third-party software or driver incompatibility.
Some users are also very likely to get the error because their PC is in a compatibility block. In that case, the best way for them would probably be to wait for Microsoft to send them a compatible update.
