The Shift key is a modifier key on your computer or laptop keyboard whose main function is to convert uppercase to lowercase, in addition to adding symbols.
Combined with other keys such as CTRL, ALT, ESC, and various others, Shift performs certain functions, including highlighting text, opening Task Manager, Sticky Keys or Filter Keys, and many others.
When the Shift key gets stuck, it can mean a number of things, including dirt under the keys, whether Sticky keys are activated, driver or hardware issues.
The good news is that there are solutions to fix the problem and get the Shift key working again.
We assume that you have already tried cleaning the keyboard from dust, food crumbs or other debris that usually remains under the keys. It’s a good idea to clean the keyboard regularly with a soft, damp cloth or even rubbing alcohol.
Do not attempt to disassemble the keyboard as this may void the manufacturer’s warranty. And if you want to use a vacuum to blow air, as is sometimes recommended, make sure it’s an anti-static vacuum.
So let’s move on to more technical solutions.
What can I do if the Shift key won’t work?
1. Uninstall and reinstall the keyboard driver
- Right click on Start
- Select Device Manager
- Find keyboards and click it to expand the list
4. Right click on the keyboard controller
5. Select Uninstall
6. Go to the Software and Drivers subsection (this name may change depending on the laptop brand) or Google your driver.
7. Once you are on the website, find and download the driver you need.
Keep in mind that you need to install the only suitable drivers that are missing from your computer. Installing the wrong driver versions can cause permanent damage to your system.
That’s why we highly recommend updating your drivers with a dedicated tool like DriverFix. It will prevent you from installing the wrong versions of the driver on your PC.
The tool scans your system and recommends necessary actions (update) while suggesting a list of compatible components from a huge online database.
You can perform this process periodically to ensure all components are in top shape.
2. Try a different or external keyboard
You can connect another keyboard to your laptop and check if the Shift key not working issue.

4. Check Filter/Sticky Keys
- Click on Start and choose Settings
- Select Accessibility
- Click on the keyboard
4. Search filter keys
5. Slide to turn it off
To disable Toggle or Sticky Keys in Windows 10, follow the same steps above, but toggle the toggle for Toggle and/or Sticky keys.
After each of these actions, check the functionality of the Shift key.
If you are using older versions of Windows, follow these steps to remove the Toggle or Sticky keys:
- Click Start.
- Go to the search box and type Ease
- Select Accessibility
4. Select Make the keyboard easier to use (or change how your keyboard works)
5. Deselect the selection under Enable Sticky Keys
6. Click Configure Sticky Keys
7. Deselect the selection under Enable Sticky Keys when SHIFT is pressed five times
8. Click Save
9. Uncheck Enable Toggle Keys
10. Uncheck the selection under Enable toggle keys by pressing and holding the NUM LOCK key for 5 seconds
11. Click Save.
Filter keys cause Windows to suppress or discard keystrokes sent too quickly or simultaneously sent keystrokes, such as when you type hurriedly or while shaking.
Sticky keys, on the other hand, cause modifier keys, such as SHIFT and CTRL, to be pressed until released or until the specific key combination is entered.
They act like lock keys. Toggle keys cause Windows to beep or beep when a lock key is pressed.
5. Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter
- Right click on Start
- Select Control Panel
- Go to the View by option in the top right corner
4. Click the drop-down arrow and select Large icons
5. Click Troubleshoot
6. Click on the Show all option in the left pane
7 . Click Hardware and Devices
8. Click Next to run the troubleshooter
Follow the instructions to run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter. The troubleshooter will start detecting any issues that might cause the Shift key to not work
6. Perform a System Restore
- Click Start.
- Go to the search field and type System Restore
- Click Create a restore point in the list of search results.
4. Enter your administrator account password or grant permission if prompted
5. In the System Restore dialog box, click System Restore
6. Click next
7. Click on a restore point that was created before you experienced the problem

To go back to a restore point, do the following:
- Right click on Start
- Select Control Panel
- Type Restore in the search box on the control panel
- Select recovery
5. Click Open System Restore
6. Click next

- Click the Start button
- Select Settings and then Update & Security
- Select Restore in the left pane.
4. Go to Advanced Home
5. Click Restart Now
6. Select Troubleshoot blue screen issues, choose an option, then click Advanced options
7. Go to Startup Settings and click Restart
8. Once your computer has restarted, a list of options will appear.
9. Choose 4 or F4 to start your computer in safe mode
A faster way to enter Safe Mode is to restart the computer three times and hold the power button for 10 seconds after each restart. On the third reboot, a blue screen should appear with a list of options.
- On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot / Advanced Options / Startup Settings / Restart
- Once your computer has restarted, a list of options will appear.
- Choose 4 or F4 to start your computer in safe mode
If the problem does not occur in safe mode, then your default settings and basic drivers are definitely not the cause of the problem.
9. Perform a Clean Boot
- Go to the search box and type msconfig
2. Select system settings
3. Look for the Services tab
4.Select Hide all Microsoft services
5. Click Disable All
6. Go to the Home tab

8. Close Task Manager and then click OK
9. Restart your computer
A clean boot reduces software-related conflicts that can lead to the main causes of the Shift key not working. These conflicts can be caused by applications and services that start and run in the background when you start Windows normally.
