In previous editions of Windows, users could easily change the Windows 10 startup sound. Not only could users change the startup sound; We can also change the sounds that are played when we disconnect / start and turn off the system.
However, Microsoft has sacrificed sound settings for faster shutdown and startup in Windows 10.
In the next section, I’ll walk you through the steps to change the Windows 10 startup/shutdown sound.
Note that the items in the next section are steps and not different methods of doing this. Therefore, you must follow the guide in the order in which it is presented.
How do I change the Windows 10 startup and shutdown sounds?
1. Disable fast startup
- Right-click the battery icon on the taskbar and select Power Options.
- Select the option Choose what the power buttons on the left do.
3. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
4. In the shutdown settings, uncheck the box next to Enable fast startup (recommended).
5. Press the Save Changes button below.
2. Turn on the startup sound
- Press the combination Windows key + I.
- Go to Personalization.
3. Select Themes in the left pane.
4. Click on Sounds.
5. Check the box next to Play Windows startup sound.
6. Click the OK button.
3. Enable the startup and shutdown sounds from Windows Registry
- Press the Window + R key to open the Run dialog box.
- Type Regedit in Run and press ENTER.
- Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER / AppEvents / EventLabels
At this point, the next step is to enable the startup and shutdown sounds.
Enable the startup sound
- Search for WindowsLogon and click ExcludeFromCPL.
- Change the value data to 0 from 1.
- Press the OK button to save it
Enable the shutdown sound
- Go back to EventLabels.
- Click the SystemExit sub subkey
- Double-click Exclude from CPL.
- Change the value data from 1 to 0.
- Click OK.
Enable the log off sound
- Go back to EventLabels.
- Click the WindowsLogoff subkey on the left.
- Double-click the ExcludeFromCPL subkey.
- Change the value data from 1 to 0.
4. Change the startup and shutdown sounds
- Press the Windows key combination + I to open Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Themes.
- Click on the Sounds option.
- Find the sound you want to adjust in the program’s event list.
- For the startup sound, click Windows Logon.
- For the shutdown sound, click Shut down Windows.
- Click Windows Logout to hear the logout sound.
5. Select Browse.
6. Choose the music you want to set as your new startup sound.
7. Press Apply and then the OK button.
From the above steps, to change Windows 10 startup sound and shutdown and logout sound, you must have fast startup disabled.
You also need to enable sounds through Windows Settings and Windows Registry.
Once you’ve done this, you can now choose a sound for the events. However, keep in mind that the audio you use for Windows events must be in WAV format.
